The Northman — A revenge tale steeped in myth

The Northman leans into its mythic roots but falters in balancing spectacle with emotional stakes. Its ambition is clear, but the execution often feels strained.

The Northman

Spoiler-free review.

Amleth’s journey is driven by vengeance, yet his motivations remain underdeveloped beneath the film's ornate surface. The story moves through a series of violent acts and ritualistic scenes without fully anchoring the protagonist’s emotional core.

The film focuses on visual grandeur, but this can make the story feel like a series of disconnected scenes rather than a smooth journey. The pacing is off, with long action sequences followed by sudden mood changes that break the flow.

Alexander Skarsgård delivers a physically committed performance, though his character’s internal conflict remains underexplored. Nicole Kidman and Claes Bang add gravitas to their roles, but their scenes often feel disconnected from the film's central mythos.

The film has a strong visual style, but it sometimes drowns out the emotional depth of the characters’ struggles. It works as a mythic story but struggles to balance its grand visuals with meaningful substance.
